Meeting with the Vice Commandant

To recognize his support to the Coast Guard Rugby Team’s participation and performance in the last Armed Services Championships in Glendale, Co, representatives of the Coast Guard Rugby Team along with representatives of the Coast Guard Rugby Foundation (CGRF) presented a ball and commemorative jersey, signed by team members, to Vice Commandant Charles Ray on November 12, 2018.

Founded by nine retired Coast Guard officers who felt their success was molded by their service careers and their Coast Guard rugby experience, the CGRF is a non-profit organization administer through the Coast Guard Foundation, dedicated to serving the Coast Guard by promoting rugby. In the words of the founder of the Coast Guard Rugby Team (1983) Gerald (“Jerry”) Gallion, (CGA ’70), “The qualities that make a good “rugger” --- toughness, teamwork, respect, humility, leadership, make for a good Coastie.”

The CGRF supports the men’s and women’s Rugby Teams through an endowment and an online fund raising effort that defrays the teams’ costs throughout the year. The CGRF has already funded tournament fees, uniforms, and offset travel costs of players, who unlike the other four services pay out of pocket for travel, meals, and lodging.

The CGRF’s long-term goals are to grow the endowment and other fundraising efforts while recruiting promising young athletes into the Coast Guard.
