In coordination with the HQ Women’s Leadership Initiative, CG Rugby & CG Rugby Foundation presented the Commandant with a commemorative SPARS jersey during the Women’s History Month event hosted by Personnel Services Command Leadership Diversity Advisory Council. The jersey honors the Women’s Reserve, known as the SPARS, during WWII and features the number 27, representing the 27th Commandant, ADM Linda Fagan.
To recognize their support to the Men's and Women's Coast Guard Rugby Teams participation and performance in the 2019 Armed Services Championships, representatives of the Coast Guard Rugby Team along with representatives of the Community Service Command (CSC) and Coast Guard Rugby Foundation (CGRF) presented signed and framed jerseys and signed CG Rugby balls to the Commandant Karl Schultz and the Vice Commandant Charles Ray.
The Coast Guard Rugby foundation was established by nine retired Coast Guard officers who felt their success was molded by their service careers and their Coast Guard rugby experience, the CGRF is a non-profit organization administer through the Coast Guard Foundation, dedicated to serving the Coast Guard by promoting rugby. In the words of the founder of the Coast Guard Rugby Team (1983) Gerald (“Jerry”) Gallion, (CGA ’70), “The qualities that make a good “rugger” --- toughness, teamwork, respect, humility, leadership, make for a good Coastie.”
The CGRF supports the men’s and women’s Rugby Teams through an endowment and an online fundraising effort that defrays the teams’ costs throughout the year. The CGRF has already funded tournament fees, and uniforms, and offset travel costs of players, who unlike the other four services pay out of pocket for travel, meals, and lodging.
The CGRF’s long-term goals are to grow the endowment and other fundraising efforts while providing other support initiatives and recruiting promising young athletes into the Coast Guard Rugby program.
